Vietnamese bronze casting artisan Nguyen Ba Chau is a highly respected master artisan who has dedicated his life to preserving and reviving Vietnam’s traditional bronze casting craft, especially the ancient art of bronze drum making.
With more than 50 years of experience, he has become one of the most prominent figures in Tra Dong bronze casting village, Thanh Hoa province. His persistence and skill have helped restore nearly lost techniques and produce many large, culturally valuable bronze works.
The rich heritage of Tra Dong bronze casting village
Tra Dong village, also known as Chè Đông, is located in Thieu Trung commune, Thieu Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province. It has a centuries-old tradition of bronze casting that has been passed down through many generations.
The village is famous for creating high-quality products such as bronze drums, bells, urns, statues, and ritual objects using traditional handmade methods. In the past, the craft flourished thanks to strong demand for religious and cultural items. However, toward the end of the 20th century, cheaper industrial materials like aluminum and stainless steel caused traditional bronze casting to decline sharply. Many ancient techniques, particularly Dong Son-style bronze drum casting, were at risk of being lost forever.

It was during this difficult time that Nguyen Ba Chau took on the mission of reviving the craft.
Nguyen Ba Chau’s journey and revival efforts
Born in 1962 in Tra Dong village, Nguyen Ba Chau grew up in a family with a long tradition of bronze casting. From a young age, he learned the craft directly from his father and other experienced artisans. The daily sights and sounds of the workshop — furnaces, molten metal, and detailed handwork — shaped his deep passion for the profession.
In the late 1990s, he began a challenging journey to restore the lost art of traditional bronze drum casting. He studied ancient artifacts in museums, researched historical patterns, and spent years experimenting. After many failures and difficulties, he finally succeeded in 2000 by casting the first traditional bronze drums in modern Vietnam. This breakthrough marked a turning point for both himself and the entire village.

Major achievements and recognition
Throughout his career, Nguyen Ba Chau has created many impressive works. He produced one of Vietnam’s largest bronze drums at the time, with a diameter of 1.51 meters. He also cast large replicas of the famous Ngoc Lu bronze drum and developed advanced techniques such as double-headed bronze drums.
One of his notable contributions was casting 1,000 statues of Mother Au Co, which served as official gifts for the 2017 APEC Summit in Da Nang. In recognition of his dedication to preserving Vietnamese cultural heritage, he was awarded the prestigious title of Meritorious Artist (Nghệ nhân Ưu tú).
The traditional bronze casting process
The bronze casting technique in Tra Dong is a sophisticated and labor-intensive art that requires great skill and patience. The main steps include:
- Preparing detailed molds using special local clay
- Mixing the right proportions of copper and tin to create quality bronze alloy
- Melting the metal in traditional furnaces
- Pouring the molten bronze into molds with precise control
- Hand-finishing and carving intricate Dong Son patterns after the piece has cooled
Each handmade piece carries unique artistic value and cultural significance that cannot be replicated by machines. Nguyen Ba Chau always maintains traditional methods while making careful improvements to suit modern requirements.

Training the next generation and lasting impact
Besides creating his own masterpieces, Nguyen Ba Chau has focused on passing the knowledge to younger artisans. He has trained more than 300 students, including his son Nguyen Ba Quy, who continues the family tradition.
Thanks to these efforts, bronze casting has become a stable livelihood for many families in Tra Dong village. The craft has also been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, contributing to cultural preservation and tourism in the region.
Vietnamese bronze casting artisan Nguyen Ba Chau stands as a shining example of dedication, talent, and love for Vietnam’s traditional heritage. His life’s work ensures that this precious ancient craft will continue to thrive for future generations.
